Reflexology is a holistic therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific points along your feet and hands (and ears and face) to help you relax and unwind and promote natural healing. The theory is that pressure on the reflex points helps to ease stress and unblock energy pathways and this helps you body function properly and feel happy and healthy.
The History ~ Reflexology is an ancient practice that involves applying pressure to points on the feet (or hands, face and ear but most commonly feet) to improve the health of corresponding organs and systems in the body. Reflexology was originally practiced in India and China more than 3000 years ago. However there is evidence that suggests it dates back to 2500 BC to ancient Egypt.
Meridians ~ As reflexologists we need to understand the meridians and their specific pathways that carry energy that circulates and nourishes the whole body. The concept of energy channels is the central point around which the practices of reflexology are based. Understanding them can help a reflexologist customise treatments to meet their clients needs and health goals.
There are twelve major organs of the body that are each linked to a meridian and the meridian is named corresponding to the internal organ it affects. The energy flows through the meridians allowing the encouragement of a life force throughout the entire body. Therefore when our meridians are healthy energy flows freely, however, when our meridians become blocked our cells, tissue, organs and body systems connected to those meridians are affected, causing an imbalance in the body. One of our jobs as a reflexologist is to help unblock those pathways bringing a sense of balance and harmony to your whole body (healing from the inside out).
So how does Reflexology work?
The theory is that reflexology balances the body and reduces stress, and that helps your body work better and improve your overall health and wellbeing.
Reflexology works by applying pressure to specific reflex points helping to unblock energy pathways between the reflex point and its corresponding organ or body system. The brain sends message signals around the body triggering the relaxation of the muscles, tissue and nerves to promote natural healing and homeostasis (balance).
Reflexology is complementary to medical treatments. It can be used alongside traditional care, but it’s not an alternative to it, and reflexologists do not diagnose or treat illnesses. We work alongside other treatments and medicines to naturally promote the bodies own healing process and improve wellbeing and health.
Reflexology is about connection.
The connection between different parts of the body.
The connection between body and mind.
And most importantly ~ the connection between the individual and themselves.
Because healing is not just about treating symptoms; it is about understanding the whole picture ~ Holism
